Comparative Analysis of The Effects of Momordica Charantia Extract and Carsil On Liver Parameters in Experimental Hepatitis

Abstract

This article examines the pharmacological properties of the dry extract of Momordica charantia fruit. (1) Background: The liver of young organisms in the prepubertal period is particularly vulnerable to toxic effects, and acute toxic hepatitis (ATH) remains a serious clinical and experimental problem. Natural hepatoprotectors such as Momordica charantia are of growing interest due to their antioxidant and cytoprotective properties. (2) Methods: An experimental study was conducted on prepubertal rabbits (0.5–0.55 kg, 2 months old). ATH was induced by a single administration of 50% CCl₄ (1.0 ml/kg). Animals were divided into 6 groups and treated orally for 6 days with Momordica extract (25, 50, or 100 mg/kg) or Carsil (40 mg/kg). Biochemical parameters (ALT, AST, ALP, total protein, albumin, total bilirubin) and endogenous intoxication indicators (sorption capacity of erythrocytes [SCE]; medium molecular peptides [MMP]) were assessed. (3) Results: Momordica extract at 100 mg/kg reduced ALT by 58.9%, AST by 42%, ALP by 45.8%, and MMP by 51.6% compared to the untreated control, surpassing Carsil in all key parameters. (4) Conclusions: Momordica charantia fruit extract at 100 mg/kg exhibits a pronounced dose-dependent hepatoprotective effect exceeding that of Carsil, and represents a promising natural phytohepatoprotective agent for toxic liver injury in young organisms.
