INFECTION IN KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION: BRIDGING THE GAP FOR PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

Abstract

Kidney transplantation is the preferred treatment for end-stage renal disease, offering improved quality of life and increased survival. However, the risk of infection remains a significant challenge for transplant recipients due to immunosuppressive therapy and the transplant procedure itself. Infections can lead to severe complications, graft dysfunction, and increased morbidity and mortality in kidney transplant recipients. This review aims to explore the current state of infection in kidney transplantation and identify gaps in prevention and management strategies. The review synthesizes evidence from recent literature and highlights the importance of bridging the gap between preventive measures, such as vaccination, prophylaxis, and surveillance, and effective management approaches for early detection and treatment of infections in kidney transplant recipients. Strategies for optimizing immunosuppressive regimens while maintaining immune function to combat infections are also discussed. By addressing the gaps in infection prevention and management, healthcare providers can enhance patient outcomes and long-term graft survival in kidney transplantation.
