ORAL SUBMUCOUS FIBROSIS: UNRAVELING AETIOLOGY AND ADVANCING MANAGEMENT CONCEPTS

Abstract

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a potentially debilitating, chronic, and progressive oral mucosal disorder that predominantly affects individuals in Southeast Asia and other parts of the world. The exact etiology of OSF remains multifactorial, involving a combination of genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and the habitual use of areca nut and betel quid. This comprehensive review aims to elucidate the current understanding of OSF's etiological factors and explore the latest advancements in its management. The pathogenesis, clinical features, and histopathological changes associated with OSF are discussed, providing insights into its complex and multifaceted nature. Additionally, the review presents an updated overview of various therapeutic approaches, including medical interventions, surgical treatments, and the potential role of emerging therapies. By shedding light on the intricate aspects of OSF, this review seeks to guide dental and medical professionals in the early diagnosis, prevention, and effective management of this challenging oral condition.
