Abstract

Periodontal diseases are a group of inflammatory conditions affecting the supporting structures of the teeth, leading to the breakdown of periodontal tissues and potential tooth loss. Understanding the risk factors associated with the development and progression of periodontal diseases is crucial for effective prevention and management. This review aims to unveil the culprits behind periodontal diseases by exploring the various risk factors that contribute to their onset and severity. The comprehensive analysis includes genetic predisposition, poor oral hygiene practices, smoking, systemic diseases, hormonal changes, stress, and certain medications. By identifying these risk factors, dental practitioners can implement targeted preventive strategies and personalized treatment approaches, thereby enhancing periodontal health and overall oral well-being.
