The Role of Individual Adaptive Caps in Mucosal Conditioning and Improvement of Complete Denture Retention in Edentulous Patients: Current Concepts and Future Perspectives

Abstract

Complete edentulism remains a major challenge in prosthetic dentistry worldwide. Although considerable progress has been achieved in denture design and fabrication technologies, long-term retention and stability of complete dentures continue to depend largely on the biological condition of denture-bearing tissues. Recent evidence suggests that pre-prosthetic conditioning of the mucosa may improve tissue tolerance, reduce traumatic complications, and enhance denture performance. Individual adaptive caps have emerged as a promising approach for gradual functional conditioning of denture-bearing tissues before definitive prosthetic treatment. This review analyzes current concepts regarding the biological mechanisms, clinical significance, and future perspectives of adaptive mucosal conditioning in edentulous patients.
